Getting Around

The city centre and waterfront Karato district are compact enough to cover on foot. Shimonoseki Station is the main transport hub, and most sights are reachable from there by bus.

Bus — A helpful English guide to the bus routes is available at the information desk in front of Shimonoseki Station. Day passes are sold for 3,000 yen and cut fares by about 25% between 9:00 and 16:00; worth buying if you plan to make several trips out to Chofu or the aquarium. The Karato Market area is about 15 minutes on foot from the station or a short bus ride.

The pedestrian tunnel to Kyushu — One of the more unusual walks in Japan. The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel runs under the strait from Mimosusogawa-cho to Moji on the Kyushu side. The crossing (780m) is free for pedestrians and costs 20 yen for cyclists who must wheel their bikes. The tunnel entrance is accessible from the waterfront, roughly 2km east of Shimonoseki Station.

Taxi — Readily available outside the station and in the Karato waterfront area.

To Chofu — The old castle town is about 8km east. Buses run regularly from the station; a taxi takes around 15 minutes.
