Shimonoseki is the fugu capital of Japan, and eating the city's signature pufferfish is close to mandatory. Nearly every restaurant in the Karato district serves it in some form. But the food scene goes well beyond fugu — the Kanmon Strait produces excellent sea bream, squid, and clam, and the Sunday Karato Market is one of the best places in Japan to eat fresh sushi at market prices.
