Botchan Tram

Historic steam-replica tram named after the famous Soseki novel set in Matsuyama

Matsuyama's tram network is one of the few surviving city tram systems in Japan, and the Botchan tram is its most photogenic element. A small replica of the original 1888 steam tram, it runs along part of the main tram line on weekends and holidays, occasionally hauling a small wooden carriage.

The regular trams are also historic and efficient — the network has been running continuously since 1887 and connects the city center to Dogo Onsen. Taking the tram from central Matsuyama to Dogo is one of the more pleasant ten-minute rides in Japan.

A story
Natsume Soseki's novel Botchan (1906) is set in Matsuyama, where Soseki taught for one unhappy year. The main character rides the new city tram and dismisses it as a 'matchbox on wheels' — the tram company later embraced the insult as a nickname, and the current retro steam-replica train is officially named after this fictional critic.
