Dogo District

Historic hot spring district east of the city, centered on the famous Honkan bathhouse

Dogo is Matsuyama's famous hot spring district, connected to the city center by the same historic tram line that has been running since 1887. The neighborhood is built around Dogo Onsen and has a dense cluster of traditional ryokan, sweet shops, sake vendors, and covered arcade streets that fill up in the evenings with visitors in yukata.

The district is compact and easy to wander. Beyond the Honkan bathhouse, there are shrines, temples, a small theme park, and the kind of onsen-town street life that has been attracting visitors here since the Meiji era. Most of the area is walkable and best explored on foot in the early evening, when the lanterns are lit and the smell of sulfur hangs pleasantly in the air.
