The Russian Soldiers' Cemetery is a small, moving site tied to an unexpected chapter in Matsuyama's history. During the Russo-Japanese War, the city held Japan's first prisoner-of-war camp, and Russian servicemen who died in captivity were buried here.
The graves are modest and carefully kept, with stones traditionally facing north toward Russia. It is a quiet stop rather than a major attraction, but it gives Matsuyama a wider historical frame beyond castle, bathhouse, and pilgrimage temples.
