Izanami Shrine is one of the historic shrines of the Mima region listed in the Engi-shiki, the 10th-century record of court procedures and recognised shrines. It is unusual because it is explicitly named for the goddess Izanami, while many related shrines were named for Izanagi.
The shrine is a quiet, specialist stop, but it rewards travelers interested in Shinto history and older religious geography.
