The Yoshida Residence belonged to an indigo-trading family and dates from the late 18th century. It helps explain why Wakimachi grew wealthy enough to build the elaborate udatsu houses along the street.
Inside, the house is modest but telling: merchant rooms, storage space and the practical architecture of a family whose money came from dye rather than courtly display.
