Udatsu Townscape

Preserved Wakimachi merchant street lined with Edo and Meiji houses and udatsu firewalls.

Udatsu Townscape is Mima's signature sight: a preserved Wakimachi street of old merchant houses, many with raised plaster firewalls between the roofs. Those udatsu were meant to slow fires, but they also became a way for wealthy merchants to show they had money to spare.

The street is compact and easy to walk. Go slowly, because the detail is in the rooflines, latticework and the way the old houses still hold the curve of the road.
