Yamadera

Mountain temple complex reached by a long stone stairway through cedars and cliffs.

Yamadera is the reason many travellers remember Yamagata. The formal name is Risshaku-ji, but everyone knows it as the mountain temple: a chain of halls, gates, cedar paths, and cliffside viewpoints reached by a climb of roughly a thousand steps.

The ascent is part of the point. Each turn makes the valley feel farther away, and the view from Godaido is one of the classic sights of Tohoku. Matsuo Basho came here on his northern journey, and the place still has the quiet, vertical drama that makes a poem seem plausible.
