Ed-Deir (The Monastery)

A vast facade carved high above the main basin, reached by an 800-step staircase that climbs the cliff at the far end of the colonnaded street. The climb takes about 45 minutes from the museum at the base; it is steep, but the steps are well cut and there are donkey-handlers offering rides if your legs give out.

The Monastery is starker than the Treasury — simpler lines, less ornament, more presence. There is a small cafe in front where you can buy mint tea and sit on a cushion, and a short scramble to a viewpoint behind reveals the Wadi Araba dropping away towards Israel. Aim to be here in the late afternoon: the climb is cooler and the western light is on the facade.

A story
Ed-Deir is bigger than the Treasury — 47 metres tall, the largest carved facade at Petra — but takes a one-hour climb to reach, which thins the crowds. The name 'Monastery' is medieval: small Christian crosses carved into the inner walls are the only later modification.
