Fuheis

Fuheis is a small Christian village a few kilometres southeast of Salt, set on a hillside with views across the Balqa region. The village has a compact centre with a church, several cafes, and a pleasant main square that makes it a worthwhile stopping point on the drive between Salt and Amman. The air is noticeably cooler here than in the Jordan Valley below.

The village is known for its mosaics — local artists have produced work that can be seen on building exteriors and in the community centre. A cluster of small galleries and craft workshops makes Fuheis a reasonable destination if you are interested in contemporary Jordanian art. The drive from Salt takes about fifteen minutes.

A story
Fuheis is a predominantly Christian village that has retained a distinctive character partly through emigration — many of its families have relatives in Latin America, and the village has a prosperous, cosmopolitan air unusual for a settlement of its size. The annual summer festival brings back emigrants from across the world, and the village square fills with people who left decades ago returning to a place that has changed less than they have.
