Um Fruth Rock Bridge

This 15-metre-high natural arch is one of Wadi Rum's most photographed spots, and for good reason. The bridge is elegant and improbable — a slender curve of rock spanning a gap between two boulders, with nothing but desert below.

Unlike the much higher Burdah Rock Bridge, Um Fruth is accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness. The scramble up takes five minutes, following a well-worn path on the rock. At the top, you can walk across the bridge itself, though it narrows enough in the middle to make your pulse quicken. The view from up there — a 360-degree panorama of flat sand and sandstone towers — is one of the defining images of Wadi Rum.

Most jeep tours stop here, so expect company at midday. If you can arrange to visit in the early morning or late afternoon, the light is better and you might get the bridge to yourself.

A story
Natural rock bridges form when softer sandstone erodes faster than the harder cap rock above. Um Fruth is geologically young — a few thousand years at most — and will eventually collapse. The Bedouin consider it good luck to cross it, and guides will cheerfully encourage you to scramble up for the photo, regardless of your comfort with heights.
