The Caspian seafront is Aqtau's most pleasant feature and the place where the city sheds its Soviet industrial identity entirely. A wide promenade runs along the shore, backed by cafes and restaurants, leading down to a long beach of fine grey sand. In summer the water is warm and swimming is popular; the sea is calm and salinity is much lower than ocean seawater, giving it an unusual buoyant quality.
At sunset the flat horizon of the Caspian turns spectacular colours with no land visible across the water. The promenade is at its best in the evening when families and couples come out to walk and the beach cafes fill up.
