Mausoleum of Rabiya Sultan Begum

Just beside the main Yasawi mausoleum stands the smaller tomb of Rabiya Sultan Begum, a Timurid princess and granddaughter of Timur. The mausoleum was built in the early 15th century and retains some of its original tilework, making it a worthwhile complement to the grand structure next door. While the Yasawi mausoleum impresses through scale and the density of its decoration, Rabiya's tomb is intimate and somewhat easier to absorb.

The two structures together illustrate the way Turkestan functioned as a sacred city — the mausoleum of the saint drew royal patrons who wished to be buried in its proximity, creating a landscape of death and piety that accumulated over several centuries. The area around the main complex is thick with tombs.
