Almost everything worth seeing in Turkestan centres on the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and the complex of shrines, tombs, and reconstructed historic buildings that surrounds it. The site has been expanded significantly since Turkestan became a regional capital in 2018, and parts of it now feel like a heritage theme park — but the mausoleum itself is genuinely extraordinary, and the pilgrimage atmosphere is unlike anything else in Kazakhstan.
