Turkestan History Museum

The Turkestan History Museum, near the main complex, covers the archaeology and history of the region from the Bronze Age through the Kazakh Khanate. The collection includes artefacts recovered from the ancient city of Yasa — the original name of Turkestan — and from the surrounding steppe, including jewellery, ceramics, and weapons from various nomadic cultures that passed through the region.

The exhibition on the history of the Yasawi mausoleum itself is the most rewarding section, showing architectural drawings, restoration photographs, and recovered fragments of the original tilework. The museum is modern and the labelling is in Kazakh, Russian, and English, which is not always the case in provincial Kazakh museums.
