The city centre along Kabanbay Batyr Avenue and the streets around the main square have the highest concentration of places to eat and drink. Russian-influenced cuisine (pelmeni, borscht, shashlik) sits alongside Kazakh staples like besbarmak and kuyrdak in most restaurants.
Local beer is cheap and drinkable. Vodka remains the preferred spirit. The bar scene is more active in winter, when outdoor options are limited and people spend long evenings indoors.
