When to Go

Ust-Kamenogorsk sits at 50 degrees north in a continental climate — winters are long, cold, and serious, while summers are short and warm. The city gets genuine winter: temperatures regularly drop below -20°C from December through February, and the rivers freeze solid. This is ice hockey season, and the city is at its most local.

Summer (June to August) is the most comfortable time for exploring the region. Temperatures reach 25–30°C, the reservoir at Ablaketka is swimmable, and the roads to the Altai mountains and Lake Markakol are accessible. Spring (April to May) can be muddy and unpredictable; autumn (September to October) brings golden birch forest and cooler temperatures. Snow is possible any time from October to April.

If you are here specifically for the mountains and outdoor activities, aim for late June through early September.
