Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace

Named after Boris Alexandrov, a local ice hockey player who became a Soviet national champion, this indoor arena is the home of Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk — one of the oldest ice hockey clubs in Kazakhstan, founded in 1958. The club has produced more than a dozen players who went on to play in the NHL or the Russian KHL, making it something of a factory for professional hockey talent in an improbable location.

If you are visiting during the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship season (roughly October to April), catching a Torpedo game here is a genuine local experience. The atmosphere is enthusiastic, tickets are inexpensive, and the sport is taken seriously in a city where winter is long and cold. The arena was renovated in the early 2000s and holds a few thousand spectators.
