Sunday Animal Market

Weekly livestock market on the edge of town, one of the most authentic in Central Asia

The Sunday animal market on the western edge of Karakol is one of the most vivid market experiences in Central Asia. From dawn, herders ride in from the surrounding valleys on horseback, leading cattle, sheep, and horses to trade. The air fills with the sounds of livestock and rapid negotiation — deals are struck with handshakes and the slapping of palms. The market is entirely local: you will not find tourist stalls or souvenir sellers here, just farmers assessing animals and buyers haggling.

Horses dominate the upper end of the market, and it is an excellent place to watch Kyrgyz horsemanship — herders demonstrate an animal's gait by riding it at speed around the enclosure before a sale. The market is at its liveliest in the first hours after sunrise, from around 7 to 10am. It is held on Sundays year-round, though the winter editions are smaller. Take a taxi or marshrutka from the centre; it is too far to walk comfortably.
