When to Go

The best time to visit Karakol for trekking is June to September, when the high passes are snow-free and the valleys are green. July and August are peak season — the alpine meadows are at their best, guesthouses and yurt camps are open, and the Ala-Kul circuit can be completed without special equipment. Afternoons can bring thunderstorms in summer; morning starts are always advisable for high routes.

May and October are shoulder months: cooler, less crowded, and cheaper. The animal market runs year-round and is worth seeing in any season. Winter brings heavy snow to the passes and most trekking routes become inaccessible without mountaineering experience, but the town itself remains functional and the lakeshore has a spare, quiet beauty.

Issyk-Kul does not freeze — the lake is too deep and slightly saline — so the southern shore south of Karakol has an unusually mild microclimate compared to the surrounding mountains.
