Bars and Cafes

Karakol is not a nightlife destination, but it has a growing number of comfortable cafes and a handful of bars, many of them aimed at the trekking crowd passing through. The centre around Toktogul and Gagarin streets has the highest concentration, with a mix of Soviet-nostalgic teahouses, Dungan teahouses, and newer Western-style cafes.

Expect the evenings to be quiet by the standards of a Central Asian regional capital — most trekkers are in bed early before a dawn departure. The best cafes double as good places to arrange guides and get trail conditions, with handwritten noticeboards and fellow travellers comparing notes. A cup of tea and a bowl of kurt (dried sour cheese balls) is the classic local combination.
