Wat Mai

Gilded temple with elaborate Ramayana bas-reliefs

Built in 1821 during the reign of King Manthatourath, Wat Mai was once the residence of the patriarch of the Buddhist clergy. The five-tiered roof is in the traditional Luang Prabang style, and the elaborate gilded bas-relief on the front veranda depicts scenes from the Ramayana and the life of the Buddha. During the Lao New Year (Pi Mai) in April, the sacred Phra Bang image is ceremonially displayed here.
