Mekong Riverside

The Mekong waterfront at Thakhek is one of the town's most pleasant spaces, particularly in the late afternoon and evening when residents gather along the river wall. The view across the water to Nakhon Phanom on the Thai side gives a sense of the Mekong's scale and the relationship between the two sides of the river. Small food and drink vendors set up along the promenade in the evenings.

The Third Mekong–Friendship Bridge is visible from the waterfront, connecting Laos to Thailand. Crossing to Nakhon Phanom for a day trip is straightforward for those with valid visas. The Thai town has a functioning local market, several temples, and a distinctly different atmosphere from Thakhek, making the 30-minute crossing worthwhile for comparison. Ferries across the river operated before the bridge and still run occasionally.

A story
Thakhek sits directly opposite Nakhon Phanom, one of the pleasanter Thai towns on the northeastern Mekong. The Third Mekong–Friendship Bridge connecting them opened in 2011, and the crossing has been open to foreign nationals since then. Standing on the Thakhek waterfront at sunset, you are looking at Thailand across 600 metres of brown river — the border that was for centuries a cultural and commercial exchange point, and still is, through the daily flow of goods and people on the friendship bridge.
