The Thakhek Loop dominates the area's travel landscape. Covering 450 kilometres over 3–5 days, it takes in limestone karst scenery, river caves, jungle, and hill tribe villages, with Kong Lor Cave as the centrepiece. Most travellers rent a motorbike in town and do the loop independently; guides are available for those who prefer company and local knowledge.
For those with less time, the caves along Route 12 east of town can be done in a day trip by bicycle or motorbike. Buddha Cave (Tham Pa Fa), with its collection of ancient statues, is only 12 kilometres from town. The riverside promenade and colonial fountain square in town are pleasant in themselves — Thakhek has more character than its size might suggest.
