Nam Song Garden sits on a raised bank above the river with direct sight lines to the karst formations that bracket the valley. At sunset those formations go from green to gold to deep orange while you sit with a cold Beer Lao and do very little. The bar has no pretensions — bamboo furniture, fairy lights, and a food menu of grilled meat and fried rice — but the location is unbeatable.
This is the kind of bar that the old Vang Vieng party scene pointed towards at its best, minus the chaos. It attracts a mixed crowd of long-term travellers, local families, and the increasing number of domestic and Chinese tourists. Arrive by five in the afternoon to get a table with an unobstructed river view.
