Hallab is Tripoli's most famous institution — a sweet shop and café that has been operating since 1881 and is widely considered to produce the finest Lebanese pastries in the country. The main branch on El Mina Avenue is part café, part confectionery shop, and part Tripoli landmark. Their knafeh (shredded wheat pastry over cheese, soaked in sugar syrup and rose water), baklava, and maamoul (shortbread filled with dates or nuts) are exceptional.
The shop is the right place to understand the range of Lebanese confectionery, which is extensive and regionally specific — northern Lebanese sweets differ from those of Beirut in ways that are immediately obvious when you taste them side by side. Hallab has several branches but the original is the best. A box of mixed pastries makes an excellent souvenir and survives the trip home well.
