Tripoli's old city is one of the best-preserved medieval Islamic urban cores in the Arab world. The concentration of Mamluk mosques, madrassas, khans, and hammams within a few streets makes it possible to spend a full day exploring without running out of remarkable buildings. The covered souks still function as working markets, not tourist reconstructions.
