Jalan Penggaram

Batu Pahat's main shopping street and the prettiest stretch of pre-war architecture in town. The two- and three-storey shophouses date mostly from the 1920s and '30s, built by Chinese textile merchants who made their fortunes here in the rubber boom. Many of the facades are still in their original tiles and stucco.

Today it is the heart of the town's textile trade — bolts of cotton, batik, and ready-made baju kurung at prices substantially below Johor Bahru or KL. Even if you are not shopping, walking the full length of the street gives the best feel for old Batu Pahat: louvred shutters, deep verandas, and the smell of coffee from kopitiams on every other corner.
