Mount Banang

A low, jungle-covered hill (442 metres) about ten kilometres south of Batu Pahat town, with a well-trodden trail to the summit and the best wide view of the surrounding rubber and palm-oil country. The climb takes around 90 minutes from the base; the trail is steep in places but well marked, with a couple of steel staircases on the worst sections.

The summit has a telecoms tower and a small clearing with views east across the Johor plains to Mount Ledang on the horizon. Most locals climb at first light to beat the heat — bring water and prepare for a soaking on the descent if the morning mists are heavy. The base is a fifteen-minute drive from town on Jalan Mount Banang.
