Line Clear Nasi Kandar

24-hour alley restaurant serving the city's most famous nasi kandar

Address 177 Penang Road, 10000 Georgetown

Line Clear is the most famous nasi kandar restaurant in Penang. It occupies a narrow alley running off Penang Road — open on three sides to the street, no walls to speak of, fans blowing the smell of curry across the pavement. The restaurant has been running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for over 70 years; the name refers to the way the queue snakes "in line, clear" down the alley waiting to be served.

The format is simple: queue up, point at the rice, then at whichever curries, meats and vegetables you want piled on top. Beef rendang, fried chicken (especially the deep-fried half-chicken), fish curry, okra and dhal are the must-tries. The curry gravies are blended together over your rice — the signature move, which Penang Mamaks call "banjir" (flooded). Eat with your fingers or a spoon, drink a teh tarik or a barley water, and pay at the cashier on the way out. Expect to spend RM 15–25 per person. Tourists in shorts and locals in suits eat side by side at the formica tables. Busy at all hours; especially busy on weekend nights.
