Penang State Mosque

Modernist state mosque with an octagonal dome, west of the centre

The Penang State Mosque (Masjid Negeri) on Jalan Masjid Negeri (Green Lane) was completed in 1980 to serve as the official mosque of Penang state. It is a striking late-modernist building — a low complex of buff-coloured walls, slender pillars, and a vast central prayer hall topped by a soft-edged octagonal dome the colour of bronze. A separate 60-metre minaret stands beside it.

The interior can hold around 5,000 worshippers and is decorated with calligraphy, marble and stained glass. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times — robes provided at the entrance, shoes removed before the prayer hall. It is a working state mosque rather than a tourist showpiece, so the atmosphere is sober and serious; come with respect. Less central than the Kapitan Keling but worth the side trip for the architecture and the contrast with the older Mughal-style mosque downtown.
