Johor has its own food identity and JB is the best place to explore it. Johor laksa — made with spaghetti rather than rice noodles, served in a thick, spiced fish and coconut broth — is the signature dish; lontong (compressed rice with vegetable coconut curry) is a popular Sunday breakfast across the state. Mee bandung, a savoury prawn-and-beef noodle broth, is another local staple worth tracking down. The city's hawker centres and coffee shops also reflect its Chinese, Malay, and Indian mix, and the exchange rate makes eating out here excellent value for visitors from Singapore.
