Kluang Rail Coffee (officially the Kluang Railway Station Coffee Shop) is Malaysia's most famous railway canteen and the main reason many food enthusiasts make the journey to this otherwise unremarkable town. The canteen occupies part of the old station building and serves from early morning (around 7am) until noon, then reopens for afternoon tea. It does not serve dinner.
The menu is simple: strong local kopi (coffee brewed with butter-roasted robusta beans and condensed milk), kaya toast (grilled bread with coconut-pandan jam and cold butter), and half-boiled eggs seasoned with soy sauce and white pepper. The coffee is smooth, intense, and sweet in a way that filter coffee cannot replicate. The toast is better here than at most of the imitation outlets that have since spread across Malaysia.
The station itself was rebuilt in 2024, but the coffee shop operates in a dedicated space within the station complex. Arrive before 9am on weekends to avoid the longest queues.
