Kluang

Small Johor town known for strong local coffee, railway breakfasts, and a central Malaysian setting.

Kluang is a small town in the centre of Johor state, Peninsular Malaysia, known mainly among Malaysians for one thing: its coffee. Kluang Rail Coffee inside the Kluang Railway Station has been serving kopi (strong, sweet local coffee), kaya toast, and half-boiled eggs since the 1940s and is one of the most celebrated breakfast spots in the country. Food enthusiasts make the trip specifically for this breakfast, served from 7am to noon and again for afternoon tea.

The town is bisected by the KTM rail line, which has passed through since 1909. When trains approach, the level crossing closes and the town pauses briefly — a piece of small-town Malaysian rhythm that locals have grown up with.

Outside town, Gunung Lambak (510 m) is the closest hiking destination, an inselberg rising steeply from the lowlands with well-maintained trails and good wildlife. Kluang sits on the North-South Expressway, about 80 km from Johor Bahru.

Day Trips

Gunung Lambak is the closest nature destination — a 510-metre inselberg (an isolated hill rising from flat land) with well-maintained trails, wooden bridges, and picnic areas at the base. The summit takes about two hours at a moderate pace and rewards with views over the surrounding Johor landscape. Long-tailed macaques and dusky leaf monkeys are common. The trailhead is southwest of town.

Gunung Belumut Recreational Forest is a longer outing, about 40 km from Kluang. The forest has waterfall trails and is more demanding than Gunung Lambak. Bring food and water.

Zenxin Organic Park — a working organic farm with walking tours, a café, and produce for sale. Good for families and a change from the town's urban character.

Johor Bahru is about 80 km south on the North-South Expressway — a straightforward day trip to the state capital and its malls, waterfront, and connections to Singapore.

Eating Out

Kluang has good local food. The railway station coffee shop is the most famous, but the town has several strong options for traditional Malaysian and Hainanese cuisine.

Kluang Railway Station Coffee Shop — Inside the railway station. Packed at breakfast with locals and visitors alike. Toasted bread with kaya (coconut jam), Mee-Siam, Nasi Lemak, and local coffee served Malaysian-style. Does not serve lunch.

Yong Tau Fu Restaurant — Jalan Haji Manan. Bean curd, fish paste, fish balls, eggplant, and bitter gourd in the classic Hakka style.

Shopping

Kluang's best shopping is food. The most popular souvenir is Kluang coffee powder — the same strong, smooth blend served at the famous railway station canteen, available in vacuum-sealed packs from the canteen itself and from small shops throughout the town. Tong Huat cookies (pineapple tarts and Chinese New Year-style biscuits) are another local specialty.

Little India on Jalan Stesen has saris, spices, and Indian household goods.

Mansor Toko Batik — a traditional shop a few minutes' walk from the bus station selling handmade batik cloth, songkoks, and Malay fabric items.

For general shopping, Kluang Mall (Jalan Rambutan) is the town's main mall with a hypermarket and chain food outlets. The Zenxin Organic Park south of town sells organic produce and dragonfruit wine from the farm.

Things to Do

Kluang's natural assets are its main draw for visitors. Gunung Lambak and Gunung Belumut, both within easy reach of the town, are designated recreational forests with jungle hiking trails. Tasik Mardi is another recreational area near the town. The Kluang Railway Station, in service since 1915, is the town's most photogenic structure — and the railway canteen on Jalan Omar is famous throughout Malaysia for its kopi (local coffee served strong and sweet), toasted bread with kaya coconut jam, and half-boiled eggs. Breakfast there is a local institution. The station cuts the town in two, and when trains pass, the road across the tracks closes and the town, as locals say, briefly stands still.
