Mont Kiara

Upscale expat enclave of high-rise condominiums, international restaurants, and weekend farmers' markets

Mont Kiara is KL's most international neighbourhood, a purpose-built enclave of luxury condominiums, international schools, and upscale malls built on a ridge northwest of the city centre in the 1990s and 2000s. It's home to the largest concentration of Japanese, Korean, and European expat residents in the city, which shows in the food: Japanese ramen shops, Korean BBQ restaurants, French bakeries, and craft coffee cafés line the street-level retail of every condo development.

The main commercial strip runs along Jalan Kiara and the interiors of Publika mall — a sprawling, partly open-air development that anchors the neighbourhood and hosts art galleries, independent boutiques, and regular weekend markets. Mont Kiara is a 15-minute drive from KLCC and not well served by public transport, so most residents rely on Grab. It's worth coming for a meal in the evening, when the restaurant scene is at its liveliest.
