Penang is a year-round destination — hot and humid throughout the year with no true dry season. The northeast monsoon brings the wettest weather between October and January, with heaviest rain on the northwest coast; the southwest monsoon (May to September) brings rain mainly in the afternoons. Penang's position in the northern Strait of Malacca means it is partly shielded by Sumatra during the southwest monsoon, so it remains drier than the east coast of Malaysia during this period.
The best time for most visitors is between December and February — slightly lower humidity, occasional fresh breezes, and the spectacular Chinese New Year celebrations in George Town. Thaipusam (January–February) draws enormous Hindu processions to the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple. The George Town Festival (July–August) fills the heritage zone with cultural events, art, and performances for about a month. During school holidays (June–July and November–December) the island is noticeably busier.
