Tua Pek Kong Temple

Tua Pek Kong Temple is Sibu's oldest Chinese temple and the most graceful building in the old centre. Its tiled roofs, carved details, and seven-storey pagoda stand close to the Rajang, which is exactly where a protective river-town temple ought to be.

Climb the pagoda if it is open; the view over the river, wharf, and low town is the best quick orientation in Sibu. The temple is active, so visit respectfully and give worshippers room.

A story
The temple traces its history to the 1850s, when Sibu was still a small river settlement rather than the busy Foochow commercial town it became later. Its seven-storey pagoda is now one of Sibu's clearest landmarks: a Chinese temple tower watching over a Borneo river port.
