Rasdhoo

Local Maldivian island in Ari Atoll, known for guesthouses, house reefs, and hammerhead dives

Rasdhoo is a small inhabited island at the northern tip of Ari Atoll, about 56 kilometres west of Malé. Unlike the resort islands nearby, Rasdhoo is a local island — you stay in guesthouses rather than resorts, eat at local cafés, and get a sense of everyday Maldivian life.

The island is tiny — you can walk around it in twenty minutes — but the diving and snorkelling are outstanding. The Rasdhoo Channel is famous for hammerhead shark sightings on early-morning dives, and the house reef is reachable by a short swim from the beach. A sandbank appears at low tide just off the island, and excursions to nearby uninhabited islands and resort reefs are easy to arrange.

Rasdhoo is one of the more accessible local islands for independent travellers, with regular speedboat and ferry connections from Malé. Several guesthouses offer dive packages. It is a good choice if you want the Maldives experience — white sand, warm water, spectacular marine life — without the resort price tag.

Getting There

Rasdhoo is reached from Malé, 56 kilometres east. The most common options:

  • Public ferry: cheapest, runs Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from Malé's Villingili ferry terminal. Three to four hours, around 100 rufiyaa.
  • Speedboat: 90 minutes, around US$50, with several daily companies. The reliable everyday option.
  • Seaplane: most resort transfers in Ari Atoll go via seaplane and a couple of operators sell empty seats — fast but expensive.

Rasdhoo has no airport and no resort transfers of its own; check ferry schedules carefully before arrival.

Things to Do

Diving and snorkelling are the reasons people come to Rasdhoo. The Rasdhoo Channel is the best-known dive in the area — known for early-morning hammerhead shark sightings — and the house reef off the southern beach is reachable on a short swim. Local dive shops run two- or three-tank trips daily.

Off the water, the village is small enough to walk around in 20 minutes. Excursions to nearby uninhabited islands and resort reefs are easy to arrange — Madivaru and Veligandu are short panga rides away, and a half-day trip to a sandbank at low tide is a classic.
