The Maldives is dry by law — no alcohol is sold or served anywhere on inhabited Maldivian soil, including Malé. The only legal drinks are on resort islands and on a handful of nearby liveaboards, with the airport hotel as a single exception. If you want a beer at the end of the day, the closest place is the Hulhulé Island Hotel beside the airport.
What Malé does have is a strong daytime and evening café scene. The "hotels" that scatter the city sell hedhikaa, sai (milk tea), espresso and freshly squeezed juices for a few rufiyaa, and stay busy from breakfast until midnight. The newer cafés around the eastern waterfront and the Artificial Beach do flat whites and brunch plates for a more international crowd. Shisha is widely available — but smoking, like alcohol, is banned in public buildings.
