Things to Do

Malé is small enough to walk end to end in under an hour and dense enough that a single afternoon will take you past most of its landmarks. The Old Friday Mosque is the obvious starting point — the oldest coral-stone mosque in the country and a UNESCO tentative-list site — followed by the golden-domed Islamic Centre that anchors the city skyline. The National Museum behind Sultan Park gives a fast overview of pre-Islamic and royal Maldivian history. The fish market on the northern waterfront in the late afternoon is the most atmospheric thing you can do here for free. For a half-day with a bit of space, head to the artificial beach in Henveiru or the Rasfannu beach park at the western tip.
