The golden-domed Grand Friday Mosque, dominating Malé's skyline

The Islamic Centre, formally the Masjid as-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam, is the largest mosque in the Maldives and the country's most prominent piece of modern architecture. The gold anodised dome, visible from ferry boats far across the atoll, sits above a marble-faced prayer hall capable of taking more than 5,000 worshippers. Inside, the woodwork — carved doors, Arabic calligraphy panels, hand-lacquered ceiling beams — was executed by Maldivian craftsmen using techniques that go back to the Old Friday Mosque.

The complex also houses an Islamic library and a conference hall. Modest dress is essential — long trousers or long skirts, covered shoulders, and a head covering for women. Non-Muslim visitors are permitted outside prayer times, usually between 9 am and 5 pm Saturday to Thursday, but it is worth checking with the staff at the gate before entering the prayer hall itself.

A story
The Grand Friday Mosque was inaugurated in 1984 and named for Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu, the 16th-century hero who liberated the Maldives from a Portuguese occupation. Its main prayer hall holds more than 5,000 worshippers — a number greater than the total adult male population of Malé only a generation before.
