Muliaage Palace

Official residence of the President, built in 1919 for an heir who never reigned

Muliaage is the official residence of the President of the Maldives, a low whitewashed colonial-style building behind a wrought-iron fence on Medhuziyaaraiy Magu near the Islamic Centre. It is closed to the public, but the exterior — palms, deep eaves, a row of arched windows — gives a glimpse of an architectural moment between the timber palaces that came before and the concrete towers that came after.

The shrine of Medhu Ziyaaraiy, just opposite, marks the tomb of Abu al-Barakat the Berber, the 12th-century traveller credited with bringing Islam to the Maldives in 1153. A short stop on the way between the Old Friday Mosque and the Islamic Centre.

A story
Muliaage was built between 1914 and 1919 as a private home for the heir presumptive, Prince Hassan Izzuddin, who was deposed in a 1934 coup before he could take the throne. After the sultanate ended in 1968 it became the official residence of the President of the Republic.
