Getting There

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN), about 18 kilometres southwest of the city, receives flights from Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow, Istanbul, Frankfurt, and a growing number of other hubs. MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Korean Air, and Air China are the main carriers. The taxi ride from the airport to the city centre takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic; agree on a price before getting in (taxis are metered but not always used — around 30,000–40,000 MNT to the centre is standard).

The Trans-Mongolian Railway connects UB to Beijing (30 hours) and to Moscow via Irkutsk (4-5 days). The Mongolian train from Beijing crosses the Gobi Desert and enters UB through rolling grasslands — one of the great overland journeys in Asia. Tickets sell out weeks in advance in summer; book early.
