Mount Zwegabin

Mount Zwegabin is the signature landscape feature of Hpa-an — a 723-metre karst peak rising sharply from the rice plain south of town, its profile visible for kilometres in every direction. The climb to the summit takes about two hours on a steep but well-maintained path with handrails on the upper sections. The views from the top encompass the entire Thanlwin river plain, the surrounding karst formations, and on clear days the hills of Thailand in the distance.

The monastery at the summit is active and has simple accommodation for pilgrims who want to spend the night. The descent is best done in the late afternoon as the light falls across the paddies. The trailhead is accessible by bicycle or motorbike from Hpa-an, making Zwegabin an ideal half-day or full-day trip combined with the cave pagodas in the same direction.

A story
At the summit of Zwegabin, a monastery has been occupied by monks for centuries. The mountain's flat top visible from town suggests a natural fortress, and during periods of conflict in Kayin State, the summit has indeed served as a refuge. The hundreds of cat statues placed around the summit monastery give it an atmosphere somewhere between sacred site and surrealism.
