Kengtung is reached by a short domestic flight from Yangon (usually via Mandalay or Heho), or overland from the Thai border crossing at Tachilek, about 160 km to the south. The road from Tachilek is unpaved in stretches and takes five to seven hours by jeep or shared minibus — it is a scenic but demanding journey. Note that foreign travellers require a permit to enter Shan State beyond certain points, and regulations change; check current requirements before travel. There are no trains to Kengtung.
