Kengtung Market

The central market in Kengtung is one of the most colourful in the Shan State, drawing traders and farmers from the hill tribes of the surrounding mountains. Market days bring the greatest variety of vendors and visitors; it is worth asking locally which days of the week attract the largest gatherings, as these vary by town.

The covered market hall sells fresh produce, dried goods, meat, and household items. Around the periphery, informal stalls set up under parasols and awnings where hill tribe women sell forest products, traditional textiles, and handmade silver jewellery. Prices are local and bargaining is normal. Arrive early — by 9am things are at their most active, and many vendors have packed up by midday.

A story
Kengtung's central market serves a patchwork of hill peoples — Akha, Lahu, Ann, Wa, and Shan — who descend from the surrounding mountains on market days. The Akha women in particular are recognisable by their elaborate headdresses of silver coins, seeds, and beetle wings. This is not a tourist market but a working one, and the produce on offer ranges from fresh chillies and forest mushrooms to traditional herbal medicines.
