Mawlamyaing rewards slow exploration. The main ridge above town, lined with gilded pagodas, is the obvious starting point — walk from the southern end at Kyaikthanlan up to Uzina in the north and the city unfolds below you. The Thanlwin waterfront, though it has seen better days, is still worth a morning stroll past the colonial-era buildings and the busy market. Day trips to Bilu Island and the massive reclining Buddha at Win Sein Taw Ya are easily arranged from the town jetty or by road.
