Day Trips

Butwal's main value for travellers is as a launch point for day trips to the surrounding region. The Siddha Baba gorge to the north is a short ride from the centre, but the major excursion is Lumbini.

Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, and one of the four most sacred sites in Buddhism. The Mayadevi Temple marks the exact spot of his birth; surrounding it is a large archaeological park containing ruins of ancient monasteries, the pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC, and a sacred garden. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 22 km west of Butwal, and the road is good — rickshaws, buses, and shared jeeps make the journey straightforward. You need at least half a day to see it properly; a full day is better.

Palpa (Tansen) is a hill town about 40 km north of Butwal on the Siddhartha Highway. The old town has a well-preserved bazaar of Newari architecture, the ruins of a Gorkha-era palace, and views over the Terai. The drive takes about 1.5–2 hours and involves some switchbacks as the road climbs into the hills.
