Mangal Bazaar

The commercial heart of the old city, Mangal Bazaar runs along the southern edge of Durbar Square and spreads into the surrounding lanes. This is where Patan's tradition of metalwork and handicrafts is most visible — bronze casters, thangka painters, and woodcarvers still work in small workshops alongside the shops selling their finished pieces. The area is far less touristy than the main square; early morning, before the tour groups arrive, it is particularly atmospheric. The streets leading north towards Kumbheshwar are good for aimless wandering.
